The City of St. John’s said Tuesday that it is not renewing the contract of city manager Bob Smart.

Neil Martin, deputy city manager, has been appointed acting city manager, effective immediately.

“I wish to thank Mr. Smart for his service to the City of St. John’s and wish him well in his future  endeavours,” Mayor Dennis O’Keefe said in a terse statement.

No reasons were cited in the city’s statement as to why it is parting ways with Smart, who had previously worked as a former deputy minister in the provincial civil service.
